About Personal Ministries

About Personal Ministries

A. Our Challenge

Seventh-day Adventists believe the focus of the church's mission is the same today that it has always been: "Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you." (Matthew 28:19,20) While we should engage in numerous activities as we respond to human need as Jesus did, our principal task is to "make disciples." In the secular culture of post-modern Britain, our challenge is to use every possible means - both traditional and innovative - to meet people where they are with the good news about Jesus.

B. Our Rationale

According to I Corinthians 12:27, "you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it." The church is not primarily a building, an institution or an organisation, but a fellowship of Christians living in inter-dependent community with each other and with Jesus. Consequently our effectiveness in making disciples as a church is related to the spiritual health and involvement of every member according to the spiritual gifts given to him or her for ministry. As Jesus prayed: "May they be one, that the world may believe…" (John 17:21) The commission Jesus gave to the church is therefore given to every believer. In summary:

1. Every believer is a minister. "'Laity' is a word derived from the Greek word for 'people' and it means all the people of God. It is a term of incredible honour. In Christ all the laity become ministering persons. The laity are the ministers. They are the means by which Jesus continues to minister in the world in the power of the Spirit." Paul Stevens

2. Every true disciple is a disciple-maker "In the trust given to the first disciples, believers in every age have shared. Every one who has received the Gospel has been given sacred truth to impart to the world. God's faithful people have always been aggressive missionaries, consecrating their resources to the honour of His name, and wisely using their talents in His service." (Acts of the Apostles, page 109)

3. Discipleship includes a life-long process of personal growth. As disciples of Christ, we are apprentices - and the discipleship journey of learning, changing and growing lasts a lifetime. An important part of "personal ministries" therefore is that we help one another and the church as a body to grow (1 Thessalonians 5:11,1 Corinthians 14:12, 26). Edification (building up) is as much a part of discipleship as evangelism.

C. Our Function

The department of "Personal Ministries" in the local church exists to encourage and empower its lay members to respond to the Gospel commission within their local church and community. The department exists at the BUC to co-operate with it's Conference and Mission leaders to:

1. identify and develop resources and training events that will assist pastors to "build up" the local church and develop each congregation into a Biblically authentic community

2. assist pastors in training, equipping and resourcing every member in soul-winning service for God

3. encourage local congregations to serve their communities in practical ways, and to promote and organise, in partnership with ADRA, the annual Ingathering campaign for the relief of human suffering abroad

Training and Consultancy

Training and Consultancy

BUC ministry training events are organised on two levels:

1. For pastors and trainers. Pastors are the primary trainers or equippers of their congregations (Ephesians 4:11,12). Where required the BUC personal ministries leader organises events and makes the necessary expertise available to equip and train pastors for this purpose.

2. For church members and ministers. Weekend, Sabbath or midweek training events are also organised to equip and train church members in a variety of ministry skills.

Training and/or consultancy can be provided in the following specific ministry and church growth areas (click on topic for more information):

Lay Bible Workers Retreat 2008

2008 Retreat
  • Have you ever thought of giving a Bible Study but did not have the confidence or were too afraid to witness to someone because you felt you have not been trained?
  • Have you ever wished that you had good resources to use during your Bible studies?
  • Are you desperate to train your members so that they can feel confident and empowered to study with people in your community?

If you have answered yes to all or any one of these questions then you will not want to miss this unique opportunity to raise the awareness and the importance of Bible work; open your Church and yourself to new work materials; offer members who do not have experience or have not been trained, an opportunity to orientate themselves to do bible work; and create a culture of members sharing the gospel with their friends, family and members in your community.

The BUC will host the first Lay Bible Workers Retreat.
Date: 21 st – 23 November 2008
Venue: Staverton Park Hotel, Daventry Northamptonshire
Cost: Only £99.00 per person if booked before 1 st November or £125.00 per person thereafter.

You can download the back panel flyer and the front panel flyer.
Complete your Application Form online, print it out and send it by post with your cheque.

Resource : A free DVD entitled ‘New Beginnings' , will be available from ASI which has resources that are generously adjustable to suit your study or preaching needs. The DVD covers most, if not all of our twenty eight fundamental beliefs. Denzil McNeilus from the ASI will be one of our trainers. This is an excellent tool to use for sharing the gospel with your loved ones, friends and community. This resource will help your regular weekly Sabbath Bible study at your church to come alive and engage our members in study.

The BUC has heavily subsidised this programme to ensure that it is affordable for Church members to attend. We have secured 120 accommodations at the hotel so please book early to secure a place.

The guest speaker for our worship sessions is Dr Joseph Kidder, Associate Professor of Church Ministries at the Andrews University . He specialises in Spiritual Formation. Dr Wilmar Hirle, the General Conference's Associate Publishing Director will also be presenting. Two expert trainers from ASI will be teaching and demonstrating the ‘New Beginning' Bible study resource and a number of BUC Directors would be offering seminars on various topics relating to Bible work and their departments. Some plenary session topics to be presented will be about the use of literature and how to engage our youths in Bible Studies.

Friends; this will be a major experience in the life of our Church and will empower your members to do something different for the Master. I am therefore asking that each Church financially assists its interested members to attend.

May God richly bless you as we serve Him.

Ingathering

Ingathering

Ingathering is an annual two to three week public collection of funds organised in co-operation with ADRA (Adventist Development and Relief Agency) in support of selected ADRA projects. Members are encouraged to collect money for various development projects, based both in this country, and abroad. Members are given permits and badges, and special collection tins for door-to-door collecting. Each year the projects vary depending on current needs. Projects have included building clinics in Africa, immunisation programmes, well-digging, and the Special Needs Camp in Aberdaron, Wales.

Ingathering is mainly a door-to-door collection, although church members can and do raise money in other ways, such as sponsored events, 'coffee mornings', car-boot sales, selling home-made bread, cakes or crafts, or collecting money through the year in their home or workplace. Adventist churches in Britain raise approximately £500,000 annually.

For more information on ADRA projects, visit the ADRA-UK web-site.

The Core of Adventism

The Core of Adventism

By Eglan Brooks, Personal Ministries Director, BUC

The emphasis of The Core of Adventism is to restudy the key doctrines of the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Knowing and correctly understanding the church’s beliefs will enable members to be more effective witnesses.
